From Childhood Dreams to Publishing Reality

At Kingbird Press, we believe every story deserves to soar. The seed for this vision was planted in the 2nd grade when our founder, Shadley Grei, “published” his very first book—a story about a rabbit, co-created with his classmate Jill East (Smiley). The young authors hand-crafted just two copies, but that simple project sparked something bigger: the idea that stories, no matter their size or origin, can have a life of their own.

Years later, Shadley wrote his first business plan for a publishing company in 2004 and revisited it again in 2015. But it wasn’t until ghostwriting a series of books during the pandemic and exploring the challenges authors face in bringing their work to readers that he decided: it was time to stop dreaming and start doing.
